FAQ kids jiujitsu

Why should my kid do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instead of Karate or Taekwondo?

Firstly, we respect and value all martial arts for the incredible benefits they offer children. However, what truly sets Jiu-Jitsu apart is its practicality. No other martial art is as effective in real-world scenarios for self-defense and anti-bullying.

Jiu-Jitsu is specifically designed to empower a smaller, weaker adult or child to successfully defend themselves against larger opponents. Think about a typical bullying situation: it’s often a bigger kid targeting a smaller one. Jiu-Jitsu equips children with the tools to neutralize threats without relying on punches or kicks, making it both effective and safe.

Is Brazilian jiu jitsu dangerous for my child?

Jiu-Jitsu is no more dangerous than playing soccer, rugby, or cricket. Rest assured, your kids won’t be kicking or punching other students. The beauty of Jiu-Jitsu lies in its effectiveness without the need for punches or kicks.

We teach children how to defend themselves safely and confidently in a controlled environment, focusing on techniques that prevent harm to both themselves and others. You can trust that your child will be well cared for while learning valuable skills for life.

What will my child need in order to get started?

To get started, all your child will need is a t-shirt and shorts without pockets. After the free lessons, if they enjoy the classes, we require investment in a gi which is a traditional suit specifically designed for Jiu-Jitsu, similar to those used in karate.

Our team will be happy to assist you with the purchase when the time comes, ensuring your child is fully equipped for their Jiu-Jitsu journey.

Does my child need any experience?

No experience is needed!

My Child is very anti-social, will classes help them socialize more?

Yes, it will. Training Jiu-Jitsu naturally places kids in social situations with peers they might not typically interact with. This helps them develop essential social skills and overcome any shyness they may be struggling with.

My Child is aggressive at home, will the training help improve this or make it worse?

Training Jiu-Jitsu will undoubtedly help improve your child’s aggression. As mentioned earlier, the training serves as an excellent outlet for them to channel their anger in a more positive way, while also instilling greater self-respect and respect for those around them.

MY child is being bullied. Can jiu jitsu help then get over this fear?

Yes, it can—and it will. Learning Jiu-Jitsu will empower your child to stand up for themselves and build the confidence to do so. Jiu-Jitsu is a highly effective and realistic martial art, particularly when it comes to handling bullying situations.

My Child is already a bully, I don't want to make it worse. Will the training help better him/her or make them worse?

Training Jiu-Jitsu will not make your child worse, in fact, quite the opposite. You can expect them to develop self-respect, respect for others, and self-control. The training itself provides a fantastic outlet for children with aggressive tendencies to channel that energy into more positive actions.

That said, we have a strict rule: if we hear that a child is using the skills we teach to bully others, they will not be allowed to train. We teach self-defense as a last resort, and we expect every student to uphold this principle.

I don't want my child to become aggressive, wont training make him get into more fights?

To put it simply, NO. Kids find Jiu-Jitsu classes to be a great way to relieve tension, stress, and anger, which actually makes them less likely to get into fights. The training also fosters greater respect and care for others.

While we teach them to be tough and able to defend themselves, all our instruction is focused on self-defense situations only, and always as a last resort, never to be used as a weapon to attack.
