Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have experience to start jiujitsu?

No experience is needed to join.

We cater for absolute beginners that will take you through the basic fundamentals at a relaxed pace for easy learning.

Do I have to compete if I join Hout Bay Jiu-Jitsu?

No, competition is completely optional.

We understand that not everyone trains to compete, in fact, the majority of our members train purely for fitness, self-defence, and enjoyment. Only around 25% of practitioners ever step into competition.

That said, if you’re curious about testing yourself, our coaches can help you prepare safely and confidently when the time comes.

I dont want to be in a long term contract can I take it class by class?

Yes, absolutely. We offer daily passes or month-to-month memberships.

We completely understand that not everyone wants to commit long-term right away, which is why we keep things simple and transparent. All memberships have a minimum term of two months, after which you may cancel at any time with one full calendar month’s written notice.

For beginners, we recommend committing to at least six months of consistent training to truly experience the benefits and progression of Jiu-Jitsu, most people find themselves hooked well before that!

What gear and clothing do I need to train?

We offer two styles of Jiu-Jitsu training, Gi and No-Gi:

- No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu: Wear a tight-fitting t-shirt or rash guard with fight shorts (without pockets) or gym leggings.

- Gi Jiu-Jitsu: This uses the traditional Jiu-Jitsu uniform (similar to those worn in judo).

If you’re just starting out, don’t worry about having all the gear right away. Comfortable, fitted clothing that allows free movement is perfect to begin with. However, once you decide to continue training, you’ll need to get a Gi, our coaches will help you find one and make sure it fits properly.

If I want to compete do you have any classes geared for that?

Yes. We provide specialized classes for students who wish to compete. Under the guidance of our head instructor, a World Champion competitor, you’ll receive hands-on support through every stage of your preparation, from technical refinement and conditioning to event registration and mindset training.

Do I have to sign a contract for membership?

Yes, all members are required to complete our membership form before training at the academy.

Your first class is free, giving you the chance to experience Jiu-Jitsu before making any commitment. After your trial session, if you want to continue you’ll need to decide whether you’d like to continue on a drop-in basis or with a month-to-month membership.

Both options are flexible and designed to fit your schedule, simply choose what works best for you.

Can you get hurt training jiujitsu

Like any physical activity, there’s always a risk of injury, but we take safety seriously. Our classes are structured to minimize risk while maintaining the intensity and realism that make Jiu-Jitsu effective.

We train smart, stay controlled, and look after one another so everyone can train hard and leave in one piece.
